As part of our Winter Program, the Red Head Gallery is pleased to present, Signs of Subversion, an exhibition by Kal Honey.

Signs are everywhere in our communities, so many aiming to control or prohibit aspects of our of behaviour, movement, or freedom. As good, orderly Canadians, we obey most of them without a second thought. Kal finds that both interesting and disconcerting. What if, rather than the expected restrictions, official signage either questioned authority or supported a more humane agenda — ideally doing it with a bit of levity? Sharing a chuckle instantly creates connection, diffuses tension and re-humanizes us. What better way to open space for dialog on any given topic — be it personal, societal or global?

A long-time graphic designer, Kal has maintained his love of creative restraints in his art signage work. Since youth enthralled with the dynamic colours and graphics of sport (formula one, cycling), his love of bold, direct communication endures in the references to signage, advertising, memes and graffiti in his work.

Biography

Kal Honey was creative and obsessively detail-oriented from an early age: drawing, building models, embroidery, photography. After attending Northern Secondary School’s specialized art program in Toronto, Kal went on to become an award-winning graduate of the Ontario College of Art. After a 2009 travel sabbatical from his 20-year graphic design career, Kal re-focussed his career on art and art instruction.

Often bold (but sometimes subtle), Kal's work in painting, graphics and collage is informed by his design sensitivity and training, his love of contrasts, and his penchant for text, wit and wordplay.

Recent events & exhibitions include: ArtWorkX and In Situ multi-arts festival, Mississauga: Latcham Gallery, Stouffville; Otto Art, Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, Queen West Art Crawl, Art Square Gallery, and RAW, Toronto. In 2017 Kal was awarded an Ontario Arts Council grant for the creation of new work. When not in the studio or classroom, Kal can often be found in the gym or out riding one of his beloved bicycles…
