Peter Dykhuis was born in London, Ontario, and after graduating from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1978 with a BFA, he lived in Toronto where he practiced as an artist, exhibition designer, and gallery technician. During this period, his notable exhibitions were at YYZ and Mercer Union in Toronto, Plug In ICA in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as well as numerous exhibitions throughout Ontario as part of the Art Gallery of Ontario’s ‘Artists With Their Work’ program.
In 1991, Dykhuis relocated to Halifax, Nova Scotia. In January 2007, Saint Mary’s University Art Gallery mounted an overview exhibition of map-based projects from the past ten years titled You Are Here that will travel to Museum London in Ontario in 2010.
Dykhuis has also participated in group shows in the United States, notably in: Flint, Michigan; Nashville, Tennessee; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Richmond, Virginia, and Buffalo, New York. On the international stage, he has exhibited at The Embassy of Canada in Tokyo in 1998 and in Vienna, Austria, in 2008. You Are Here (Works on Paper) was presented at the Sydney College of the Arts in Australia in 2009. Dykhuis has exhibited at Red Head Gallery since 2005.
Dykhuis began working at the Anna Leonowens Gallery at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1992, becoming its Director in 1996. He has also curated six exhibitions for the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and has written reviews for Art Papers, ArtsAtlantic, Border Crossings, C Magazine, Parachute, and Canadian Art. He became the Director/Curator of the Dalhousie Art Gallery (Dalhousie University) in August of 2007 where he is responsible for the curatorial programming and administration of the Gallery.
